Memoir Three is the top of the range and the clearest demonstration of what the series is for. An Intel Core i7 14700KF and an RTX 5080, in a machine priced where DDR5 builds with far less silicon in them currently sit.

Twenty cores and twenty-eight threads is a workstation core count. Put it alongside a 5080 and you have a machine that plays anything at 4K and then renders, encodes or compiles considerably faster than the AMD gaming chips at similar money. If your evenings involve both, this is the one.

It also asks the most of us of any Memoir. A 14700KF will take 253W if you let it, and how carefully that is configured is the difference between a fast machine and a loud one. That configuration is included rather than sold as an extra.

🧬 Built to last, designed to evolve

This system is built on the mature Intel LGA1700 platform using DDR4 memory. That is a deliberate choice and it is worth being straight about the trade-off. DDR4 is considerably cheaper than DDR5 right now, which is what lets this build carry a proper graphics card and a 360mm cooler at this price. The cost is a narrower CPU upgrade path than a current platform offers, since LGA1700 is at the end of its life rather than the start. Everything else stays wide open: graphics card, storage, memory capacity, cooling and case are all straightforward to change later.

  • Up to 5.6GHz boost on the performance cores, 3.4GHz base. 125W base power and 253W under a full turbo load, which is the number that shapes the rest of this build
  • This is a workstation core count sold at a gaming price, and it is where the DDR4 saving ends up. In DaVinci Resolve, Blender, Handbrake and compilation it is far ahead of the eight-core AMD gaming chips that cost similar money. In pure gaming those AMD chips are quicker. Which of those two facts matters more to you is the whole decision on this listing, and we would rather set it out than sell around it
  • The hybrid layout earns its keep here. Games sit on the eight performance cores while a render, an encode, a stream or a compile runs across the twelve efficient cores without either getting in the other's way
  • The F suffix means no integrated graphics. On a machine with a 5080 in it that is a saving rather than a loss, though it does mean there is no backup display output if the graphics card ever fails
  • Honest note on the K: this chip is unlocked, but the B760 chipset it sits on does not permit CPU overclocking, and on a 253W processor we think that is a good thing rather than a limitation. See the motherboard section below

  • We step up the cooler on this build rather than reusing the one fitted to Memoir One and Two, and the reason is straightforward: 253W is a great deal more heat than 181W, and a cooler that is adequate on a 14600KF would spend its life working hard here
  • 360mm radiator at 38mm thick rather than the usual 27mm, with three A-RGB fans. That extra thickness is a substantial increase in surface area, which is what lets the fans hold a low speed while shifting a lot of heat. Fan speed is what you actually hear
  • It also carries a small fan built into the pump head that cools the motherboard's power stages directly. On a board being asked to feed a 253W processor, that is not a gimmick. Most AIOs leave that area to chance
  • Offset copper cold plate with micro skived fins, MX-6 thermal paste pre-applied, and a 6 year ARCTIC warranty
  • Top mounted as exhaust, so processor heat leaves the case immediately rather than being pushed back down across the graphics card

  • 12 phase power design. Plain English translation: enough power delivery to hold a 14700KF's boost clocks under sustained load rather than backing off when the power stages get warm. This is the chip in the range that asks most of the board, which is exactly why the cooler above carries a dedicated VRM fan and why we set the power limits ourselves rather than accepting what the board ships with
  • Four DDR4 slots supporting up to 128GB. Two are used by the memory fitted, so unlike a small form factor build you can add capacity later rather than replacing what is there
  • Two M.2 slots, both PCIe 4.0 x4, so a second fast drive can be added without touching the first
  • PCIe 4.0 x16 for the graphics card. The RTX 5080 is a Gen5 card and measured differences between Gen4 and Gen5 on it come to roughly 1 to 2%, so it is not the thing setting your frame rate. We mention it because it is the sort of specification a buyer checks afterwards
  • Intel Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and Realtek 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet onboard
  • Why a B760 and not a Z-board. Z-series is the chipset that unlocks CPU overclocking, and the DDR4 versions of those boards are effectively no longer available in the UK. Manufacturers stopped making them when the platform moved to DDR5. So on any current DDR4 LGA1700 build, from us or anyone else, the processor runs at its stock boost behaviour. We would rather tell you that plainly than let you find out when you go looking for the multiplier. Memory tuning and graphics card overclocking are both unaffected, and for what it is worth we would not recommend overclocking this processor even if the option existed - see the setup section below

  • TLC flash rated at 6,500MB/s or better, which holds its speed through long sustained writes rather than dropping off once a cache fills. From this tier upward we do not fit QLC drives
  • That matters more on this build than any other we sell. Twenty cores and a 5080 make a genuinely capable video editing and rendering machine, and a drive that slows during large file transfers is exactly the wrong bottleneck to put in front of it. If you work with 4K footage regularly, the 2TB option below is worth taking at the point of order
  • Higher write endurance than the entry-tier alternative, which matters if you record gameplay, edit video, or install and uninstall a lot

A 14700KF at its stock 253W ceiling produces a lot of heat for a few percent of performance at the very top of the curve. A properly set undervolt and power limit gives back nearly all of that performance while dropping the heat, and therefore the noise, substantially. If you buy one option on this listing, buy this one

  • Memory tune and GPU overclock on top of everything in Premier. Note that CPU overclocking is not part of this on any Memoir build
  • Being straight about what this includes and what it does not. The B760 chipset does not permit CPU core overclocking, so there is no multiplier tuning to sell you here and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
  • More to the point, we would advise against CPU overclocking on this platform even if the chipset allowed it, and on a 253W 14th generation chip we would say so emphatically. Pushing more voltage into these processors is precisely what caused the degradation problems they became known for. The mitigation Intel released works by restraining voltage, so deliberately raising it again is working against the fix. On a mature Intel platform the sensible tuning direction is downward, not upward. Undervolting buys you a quieter, cooler, longer-lived machine. Overclocking buys you a few percent and a shorter life. On this processor in particular, we would rather sell you the first one.
  • What Ultimate does buy on this build is a proper memory tune, which DDR4 genuinely responds to, and a graphics card overclock, which on a 5080 is worthwhile. If a fully unlocked processor is what you want, our AMD builds are the ones to look at and we will point you there honestly

  Worth addressing directly, because it is the first thing a careful buyer searches, and this is a 14th generation processor so it applies here. Intel identified a fault that could degrade 13th and 14th generation desktop chips over time when they were allowed to run at excessive voltages, and released microcode updates through motherboard manufacturers to prevent it. Every machine we build ships with a current BIOS carrying that microcode, with power limits set by us rather than a board manufacturer's aggressive defaults, and with a brand new processor that has never run a day without the fix in place. The mitigation prevents the problem arising, which is exactly why it matters that the chip is new and configured correctly from the start. If you would prefer to sidestep the question entirely, Memoir One uses a 12th generation processor which was never affected.

• This chipset does not allow CPU overclocking, and on a DDR4 Intel build we would not recommend it anyway (click or tap to read more)

  The 14700KF is an unlocked processor, but DDR4 Z-series boards are no longer available in the UK, so a B760 is the only sensible option on a DDR4 LGA1700 build. It is stated in the specification list as well, because it is the sort of thing a buyer discovers afterwards and feels misled about. For the avoidance of doubt: this is not a limitation we are apologising for. On a mature Intel platform we tune downward for heat and longevity rather than upward for a few percent, and we would give you that advice on a Z-board too.
