Made to be seen, not seen into

There is no window in a Fractal Terra and no lighting inside it. What you get instead is 10.4 litres of anodised aluminium with a front panel milled from a solid block of FSC-certified walnut, so the grain is different on every one. It is a closed object that belongs on a shelf rather than under a desk, and Rune Zero is the least expensive way to own one.

Behind the wood sit a Ryzen 5 5600 and a Radeon RX 9060: comfortable 1080p at high settings, high frame rates in competitive games, and FSR 4 to lean on as titles get heavier. That pairing is deliberate at this tier. The chassis is a real part of what you are paying for, and we would rather put a level-headed card behind that walnut than build something most people could not justify.

Building in 10.4 litres takes a good deal longer than building in a tower. The spine is set by hand, the cabling is routed and stowed around it, and the fan behaviour is tuned on the finished machine rather than left where the board put it. That time is in the price rather than added to it.

🧬 Built to last, designed to evolve

This system is built on AMD's AM4 platform rather than the newer AM5. That is a deliberate choice at this price: AM4 is a mature, extremely well supported socket with cheap memory and cheap boards, and it is what makes this machine cost what it does. Being honest about the trade, AMD have stopped releasing new processors for it, so the processor here sits near the top of a range AMD stopped extending. The CPU upgrade we offer on this platform is the Ryzen 7 5700X. The graphics card, storage and cooling all remain straightforward to change, within the space limits any small form factor build has.

  • If you ever want more cores, the Ryzen 7 5700X drops straight into this board. It is the CPU upgrade we offer on this platform, and it helps most with streaming, editing and heavy multitasking rather than with frame rates

  • The cooler AMD ship with the 5600, and it is genuinely matched to it. A 65W processor and the peaks it boosts to are what this cooler was designed around, and it holds them without difficulty
  • Being straight about it: it keeps the 5600 within temperature comfortably, and it is audible when the processor is working hard. It is not a bad cooler, it is a small one. If quiet matters to you, the Thermalright AXP120-X67 upgrade below is the single most effective change you can make to this machine

  • RDNA 4 with 8GB of GDDR6. Comfortable 1080p at high settings in modern titles, and very high frame rates in competitive games
  • Supports FSR 4, AMD's machine-learning upscaler, which needs RDNA 4 hardware and is a real step up from FSR 3. It is the reason a card at this level still has life in it in two years
  • AV1 encoding for streaming and recording at a much better quality-to-bitrate ratio than older codecs
  • A modest card by design. It draws little power, produces little heat, and it is physically small, which in a case that measures graphics cards in millimetres of width is worth as much as the power figure
  • Being straight about ray tracing and about the 8GB: Radeon is still behind NVIDIA on ray tracing, and 8GB is enough at 1080p but can run short at 1440p with textures at maximum in the heaviest recent titles. Both are fixable by turning one setting down a step, and neither is a surprise at this price

  • Anodised aluminium with a front panel of solid FSC-certified walnut. Not a veneer and not a printed finish - it is a machined block of real wood, so the grain is different on every one. It is the reason people buy this case
  • Three finishes, all with the same walnut front. Graphite is a deep graphite black and is what we build as standard. Silver is a pale silvery white, and Jade is a soft jade green.   • We do not fit the base fan on this tier, and we will explain why rather than leave a gap in the spec list. The Terra ships with no fans at all. It has one 120mm mount in the base, and at Rune Zero's power level it is not doing enough work to be worth the noise it makes
  • The graphics card has its own side of the chassis and draws air through the perforated panel next to it. A modest card at this power level is comfortable there
  • The processor side is cooled by the Wraith Stealth pulling air through the vented panelling. A 65W chip is a small amount of heat to move
  • If you would rather have the fan, ask us on live chat and we will fit one, with a grille over it so cables cannot catch in the blades. It earns its place on the tiers above, where there is far more heat to shift. Here it is closer to insurance than necessity, and we would rather tell you that than sell it to you
  • Fan curves and power limits are set by hand before dispatch and verified through our standard stress testing rather than assumed

  • SFX form factor, because that is what a case this size takes. An SFX unit is roughly half the volume of a standard ATX supply and costs considerably more for the same wattage, which is one of the hidden expenses of building small and one we would rather explain than bury

  The upgrade we would take first on this build, ahead of anything else. A 67mm low-profile cooler with six heatpipes and a full-size 120mm fan, in place of a small stock cooler spinning fast. It is the difference between a machine you can hear across a room and one you cannot. Worth it for almost everyone, and particularly if the machine is going somewhere you sit. The one thing to know is that a taller cooler moves the spine, which narrows the space available for a graphics card - not a limitation for the RX 9060 in this build, but relevant if you plan a much larger card later.

  Eight cores instead of six, on the same platform and the same cooler. Worth it if you stream while you play, edit video, or run anything that genuinely uses every core. Honest caveat: in most games it will not raise your frame rate much, because the 5600 is already quick enough per core and the graphics card is the limit. If frames are what you are after, put the money into the card instead and we will say so if you ask.
