Console-sized, console-simple, but plays the way a console can't

Matboks is about the size of a games console, weighs little enough to carry in one hand, and costs under a thousand pounds. It is meant for someone buying their first gaming PC, or moving across from a console and wanting the same thing on the shelf but with a PC behind it. It arrives set up, tested and ready to play.

The shape is not an accident. This design came out of work on PC36 Konsol, a project we still have in development, and it is the first machine we have built in that form. Twenty-one litres, a tempered glass side, a handle in the top, and a single slim ring of light at the back rather than a light show.

There is one of these. It is already built, it is not being restocked, and when it sells the listing comes down.

🧬 Built to last, designed to evolve

Built on AMD's AM4 platform. We will be straight about what that means: AMD have stopped releasing new processors for this socket, so this is a machine to upgrade within rather than to build forward from. What you get in exchange is why it costs what it does, because AM4 boards and DDR4 memory are a fraction of the price of the current generation and the performance difference at this level is not something you would feel. The board has four memory slots with two free and two M.2 slots with one free, so memory and storage both grow by addition rather than replacement, and the Ryzen 7 5700X is a drop-in step up whenever you want it.

  • Still a genuinely good gaming processor, and by some distance the best value chip AMD have ever sold. At 1080p with this graphics card it is the card that sets your frame rate, not the processor
  • 65W matters more than usual in a case this size. A processor that produces very little heat is not a compromise here, it is the correct choice
  • If you ever want more cores, the Ryzen 7 5700X drops straight into this board. It helps with streaming, editing and heavy multitasking rather than with frame rates

  • The low-profile cooler AMD ship in the box, rated to the 5600's full 65W. It keeps the processor comfortably within its limits
  • Being honest about it: this is the one part of the machine we would change first if it were ours. The Wraith is a small aluminium cooler with a small fan, and a small fan has to spin quickly to move air. It is not that it cools badly, it is that you can hear it working under a sustained load. A tower cooler does the same job far more quietly
  • It is not fitted here because the machine is already built and the price is what it is. If quiet matters to you, ask us on live chat before you order and we will tell you honestly what a change would involve
  • The case allows coolers up to 164mm, so there is no practical limit on what could go in later

  • AMD B550 on a micro-ATX board, socket AM4, with PCIe 4.0 x16 for the graphics card and four SATA ports
  • Four DDR4 slots supporting up to 128GB, and only two are used. That is unusual at this price and it is the reason memory is a straightforward upgrade on this machine rather than a replacement job
  • Two M.2 slots: one PCIe 4.0 from the processor and one PCIe 3.0 from the chipset. One is free, and it is the Gen4 one, so a future drive can run faster than the one fitted
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in with the aerial supplied. This is Wi-Fi 5 and Gigabit Ethernet, both a step behind our dearer machines, and we would rather say so here than have you find out
  • Rear I/O gives four USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports at 5Gbps and two USB 2.0, plus HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA. The case's front USB-C runs from the board's internal header

  • A matched pair running dual channel at DDR4-3200 CL16, which is the sweet spot for Ryzen on AM4 and the speed the memory controller runs best at
  • Dual channel is not a detail, it is the difference. On AM4 it matters more than on newer platforms, so a matched pair is the right call even at this price. A single 16GB stick would cost you real frames
  • 16GB is enough for every current game at these resolutions
  • Two of the four slots are free. Going to 32GB later means adding a pair rather than throwing anything away, which is a genuine advantage over the two-slot boards common at this price.   • 3,500MB/s read and 3,000MB/s write, 3D TLC flash, rated for 600TB of writes with a five year warranty
  • TLC rather than QLC, which matters more day to day than the PCIe generation does. TLC holds its write speed as the drive fills; a cheaper QLC drive slows down once its cache is used. At this price most machines get QLC, and this one does not
  • It is a PCIe 3.0 drive rather than the PCIe 4.0 we fit across most of the range. In practice that is very hard to notice: game load times depend on far more than sequential speed and Windows feels identical. Copying very large files between drives is where you would see it
  • Biwin are not a name most people know in the UK, so it is worth saying who they are: a listed Chinese memory manufacturer with about three decades in the industry, doing their own packaging, testing and production rather than badging someone else's drive. The five year warranty and the 600TB write rating are the parts that matter
  • The free M.2 slot is the PCIe 4.0 one, so a faster second drive later will run at full speed rather than being held back

  • RDNA 4 with 28 compute units and 8GB of GDDR6 on a 128-bit bus, backed by 32MB of Infinity Cache. 132W board power
  • Comfortable 1080p at high settings in modern titles, and very high frame rates in competitive games. That is what this machine is for and the card is well matched to it
  • FSR 4, AMD's machine-learning upscaler, which needs RDNA 4 hardware and is a real step up from FSR 3. It is what puts 1440p within easy reach on a card at this level, and it is the reason this card still has life in it in two years
  • AV1 encoding for streaming and recording, at a much better quality-to-bitrate ratio than older codecs
  • 132W is a very modest heat load, which is exactly what twenty-one litres wants. It is a large part of why this machine stays composed in a case this small
  • Being straight about ray tracing and about the 8GB: Radeon is still behind NVIDIA on ray tracing, and 8GB is enough at 1080p but can run short at 1440p with textures at maximum in the heaviest recent titles. Both are fixable by turning one setting down a step, and neither is a surprise at this price
  • The ASUS Dual card is 202mm long in a case that allows 342mm, so it sits with a great deal of room around it

  • 375 × 195 × 323.5mm, around 21 litres, micro-ATX, with a tempered glass side panel and a carry handle built into the top
  • This is the whole idea of the machine. It is roughly console-sized, it sits on a desk rather than under one, and the handle means you can pick it up and take it to a friend's house without dismantling your life
  • Graphics cards up to 342mm as this machine is configured, or 328mm if a front fan is added later, and CPU coolers up to 164mm. That is generous for the size and leaves real room to change either part later

  • Rear in, top out, which is deliberate and not the usual arrangement. In a chassis this compact the rear mount sits clear of the graphics card and draws cool air straight into the middle of the machine, and heat leaves through the roof, which is where it wants to go anyway. Pulling front to back in a case this shallow simply does not have the run to work with
  • Two fans in 21 litres around a 65W processor and a 132W card is a comfortable job rather than a marginal one
  • Only the rear fan is lit, and only as a thin ring around the hub. The top fan is plain black. This is a machine with a hint of light rather than a light show, and it can be turned off entirely if you would rather. There is a note about that below

It came out of our PC36 Konsol development work, and it exists because these particular parts came together at the right price at the right moment. When it sells the listing comes down. That also means the specification here is the specification: unlike our built-to-order machines we cannot swap the case or the board for you, because this one is already assembled and tested.   The memory options in the listing below are priced for our DDR5 machines, and this is a DDR4 machine. DDR4 currently costs a fraction of what DDR5 does, so buying the upgrade through the dropdown would mean paying a DDR5 price for DDR4 memory.   The Wraith Stealth is rated for the full 65W this processor produces and it keeps it comfortably in check. What it does not do is stay quiet while doing it, because a small fan has to spin fast to move air. Everything else in this build is unusually quiet for the size, so the cooler is what you will hear. On a built-to-order machine we would fit a tower cooler; on this one the machine is already assembled. Premier Optimisation includes a hand-tuned fan curve, which is the practical route to improving it, and we are happy to talk through the alternatives on live chat.

  We would rather say this plainly. AMD have stopped releasing new processors for this socket, so the Ryzen 7 5700X is broadly where this machine's processor ceiling sits. What you get in exchange is a thoroughly proven platform with cheap, plentiful memory, and a machine that costs meaningfully less than the current-generation equivalent. For a 1080p build at under a thousand pounds we think that is the right trade, and the graphics card, storage and memory can all still be changed.
