🌅 Lumen One
A proper gaming PC, in 10.4 litres of aluminium and walnut
Lumen One exists because the Fractal Terra deserves to be affordable. It is a 10.4 litre case machined from anodised aluminium with a solid walnut front, and it looks less like a gaming PC than almost anything else you can buy. Most systems built in it cost well over two thousand pounds.
This one does not, and the way we got there is worth explaining. We built it on AMD's mature AM4 platform with DDR4 memory rather than the current AM5 and DDR5. That saves a significant amount, and we have put the saving into the case and the graphics card instead. The Ryzen 5 5600 and RTX 5060 handle 1080p at high and ultra comfortably, and reach into 1440p with DLSS 4 helping.
The result is a small, quiet, genuinely handsome machine that sits on a desk rather than under one.
🧬 Built to last, designed to evolve
This system is built on the mature AMD AM4 platform using DDR4 memory. That is a deliberate choice and it is worth being straight about the trade-off. DDR4 is considerably cheaper than DDR5 right now, which is what lets this build carry a proper graphics card and a case of this quality at this price. The cost is a narrower CPU upgrade path than the current AM5 platform offers. Graphics card, storage and cooling all remain straightforward to change later, within the space limits any small form factor build has. Upgrades on AM4 are all possible, they just need a little more thought than they would on a newer platform.
📃 Specifications
- 🧠 CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- 6 cores, 12 threads. A well-rounded processor for 1080p and entry 1440p gaming, streaming and everyday use
- One of the most efficient processors AMD has made at this price point. Its single-core performance keeps pace with the RTX 5060 rather than holding it back, which is the only thing that matters at this tier
- A 65W chip, which is exactly what you want in a case this size. The less heat a processor makes, the less air a 10.4 litre chassis has to move
- A Ryzen 7 5700X upgrade is available if you want eight cores. See the upgrade options below
- ❄️ CPU cooler: AMD Wraith Stealth
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- AMD's own low-profile cooler, supplied with the processor and rated for exactly this chip
- Being straight with you: this is the part of the build we would upgrade first. It keeps a 65W 5600 within spec and it will not throttle, but under a long gaming session in a case this small you will hear it working. It is a competent cooler in an unforgiving space
- The Thermalright AXP120-X67 upgrade below is a considerably better low-profile cooler and is the single change that makes this machine quiet. If the PC is going on your desk rather than beside it, take it
- Pre-applied thermal compound, and we set a manual fan curve in the BIOS before dispatch rather than leaving it on the motherboard's default
- 🔲 Motherboard: ASRock B550M-ITX/ac (Mini-ITX)
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- 8 phase power design with 50A Dr.MOS and 60A chokes. Plain English translation: unusually strong power delivery for a Mini-ITX board, so the 5600 runs comfortably and a 5700X or 5800X3D would too
- PCIe 4.0 x16 for the graphics card, which is full bandwidth for the RTX 5060
- One M.2 slot, Gen4 x4, occupied by the drive fitted. Storage expansion is via the four SATA ports and the case's two 2.5 inch mounts rather than a second M.2
- Two DDR4 slots, both used by the memory fitted. A capacity upgrade means replacing the kit rather than adding to it, so if you think you will want 32GB, it is cheaper to choose it now than later
- Straight point on connectivity: this board has Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2, not Wi-Fi 6. It is the older standard, and it is one of the compromises that keeps this build where it is on price. For gaming over Wi-Fi it is perfectly serviceable, and we would recommend the Gigabit Ethernet port regardless
- PC36 only uses motherboards chosen for stability and longevity. See our Trusted brands page
- 📏 Memory / RAM: 16GB (2×8GB) DDR4-3200 CL16
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- Dual channel DDR4-3200 CL16, the speed and timing the AM4 platform responds to best
- 16GB is the right starting point for 1080p gaming and everyday use, and enough for gaming with a browser and Discord running alongside
- This board has two memory slots and both are used. A 32GB option is available in the listing options below, and choosing it now costs less than replacing the kit later
- Specification guaranteed, model may vary. Happy to confirm the exact part on request
- 💾 Storage: 1TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD (QLC)
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- PCIe 4.0 speeds for quick boots and fast game loading. In normal use it feels identical to any other modern NVMe drive
- QLC is the flash type, and it is what keeps a 1TB drive affordable. The one place you would notice it is writing very large files back to back, where sustained transfers of tens of gigabytes slow down once the drive's fast cache fills. Gaming, browsing and everyday work never do this
- Expansion here is via SATA rather than M.2, since the board has a single M.2 slot. The case includes two 2.5 inch mounts, so adding a SATA SSD later is straightforward
- Specification guaranteed, model may vary. Happy to confirm the exact part on request
- 🎮 Graphics card: NVIDIA RTX 5060 8GB
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- Built for confident 1080p gaming at high and ultra settings, and capable of 1440p at medium to high in most modern titles
- DLSS 4 with frame generation, which adds meaningful headroom in supported titles and matters most at 1440p
- It also happens to be the right shape for this case. A 5060 is a short, two-slot, single 8-pin card, which is what lets the Terra's internal spine sit where it needs to for a low-profile cooler above it. Bigger is not automatically better in 10.4 litres
- Straight answer on the 8GB: it is enough for 1080p and for 1440p at sensible settings, but it is the part of this build that will age first as game textures grow. If longer-term 1440p is the goal, the RX 9060 XT 16GB upgrade below is the one we would point you at
- The chipset and VRAM are guaranteed: it will always be an RTX 5060 with 8GB. The AIB brand varies with availability, and we only use established manufacturers. See our Trusted brands page for more info
- 🧰 Case: Fractal Terra - Silver
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- 10.4 litres. Anodised aluminium throughout, an 8mm thick machined aluminium front, and a solid FSC-certified walnut panel. It is 343mm wide, 218mm tall and 153mm deep, which is roughly the footprint of a hardback book laid flat
- The clever part is the spine: a stepless sliding central wall that moves through 30mm, letting you trade graphics card width against CPU cooler height. Set it one way and you can fit a 77mm cooler. Set it the other and you can fit a much fatter graphics card with a 48mm cooler above it
- That adjustment is the whole reason this build works. We set the spine to suit the exact card and cooler going in, which is not something you can do in a fixed chassis, and it is why the parts list here is chosen as a set rather than assembled from whatever fits
- Supports graphics cards up to 322mm long, and two 2.5 inch drives
- Small form factor builds take considerably longer to assemble and cable than a standard tower. That work is included in the price rather than added to it
- 🌬️ Case cooling: No case fan fitted. Direct ventilation through both perforated side panels
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- The Terra has a single 120mm mount in the base and we leave it empty on this build. That is a decision, not a saving: at this heat load the fan adds noise more readily than it adds cooling
- Both side panels are perforated across their full area, sitting directly alongside the graphics card and the processor. In 10.4 litres the components are close enough to the outside of the case that the graphics card's own fans draw cool air straight through the panel beside them. There is no long internal path for air to travel
- A 65W processor and a graphics card in the 145W class is a modest amount of heat to move. Higher-specified builds in this same case do get the base fan fitted, because they need it. This one does not
- Fewer moving parts also means fewer things making noise and fewer things to fail
- Fan curves tuned manually before dispatch, and airflow verified through our standard stress testing rather than assumed
- ⚡ Power supply: Thermaltake Toughpower SFX 750W 80+ Gold, fully modular
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- SFX form factor, because that is what a case this size takes. An SFX unit is roughly half the volume of a standard ATX supply and costs more for the same wattage, which is one of the hidden expenses of building small
- 750W against a build that draws well under 300W in gaming. That margin is deliberate rather than wasteful: it keeps the unit in its quiet, efficient band, and it means a substantially larger graphics card could go in later without touching the power supply
- Fully modular, which matters far more here than in a big case. In 10.4 litres there is nowhere to hide a cable you are not using
- 80 PLUS Gold rated
- 🔌 Cabling: Black cabling, routed for a small chassis
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- Black cables throughout. The Terra has no glass panel, so nothing here is on display and the cabling is optimised for airflow and serviceability instead of looks
- Fully modular, so only the cables this build uses are installed. In a case this size that is a functional requirement rather than a tidiness preference
- White internal components are available on request. Ask us on live chat before you order and we will price it up
- 📶 WiFi / Bluetooth / Ethernet: Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 4.2 and Gigabit Ethernet, included
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- Built into the ASRock B550M-ITX/ac. No separate adapter needed, and the aerial is supplied in the box
- Wi-Fi 5 rather than Wi-Fi 6. We would rather tell you that here than have you discover it later. It is an older standard, it works perfectly well for gaming and streaming, and it is one of the reasons this build costs what it does
- Gigabit Ethernet for a wired connection, which we would recommend for competitive play on any machine
- 🪟 Operating system: As chosen by you from the listing options below. Windows 11 Home (OEM) is recommended.
- 🧹 Setup and optimisation: PC36 High-Class Standard. Full stress test with certificate, bloat-free installation, and BIOS set up properly
Click or tap for deeper spec info
PC36 High-Class Standard, included free with every build
- Ready the moment you open the box. Your PC boots straight into Windows with a local account already set up. No account sign-in wall, no first-run questionnaire, no half-hour of setup before you can use the machine you just bought
- BIOS updated and configured properly: manual fan curves, PBO enabled, XMP enabled, Secure Boot enabled
- Vanilla Windows 11 installation if you choose Windows, with no bloatware added by us, and all drivers loaded and ready to go
- Full stress test with certificate. Every system is torture tested on CPU, RAM and GPU before dispatch, and ships with the certificate to prove it
PC36 Premier Optimisation, available in the listing options
- CPU tuning to bring thermals and noise down with minimal performance loss, plus a deeper strip and debloat of Windows
- This matters more in a small case than a large one. There is less air to work with, so how carefully the fan curves and CPU voltages are set is the difference between a machine you notice and one you do not. On this build it is the second thing we would recommend after the cooler upgrade
PC36 Ultimate Performance Tune, available in the listing options
- Advanced overclocking: RAM tune, CPU tune and GPU overclock on top of everything in Premier
- Not the right option for this build, and we would rather say so. Small form factor systems are limited by the air available to them, not by clock speeds, so pushing power upward works against what this machine is for. Put the money into the cooler upgrade and Premier Optimisation instead
- 🛡️ Warranty: 3 years parts & labour (return to base)
Click or tap for deeper spec info
- Standard 3-year coverage included, parts and labour both
- Optional extended warranties in the listing options below
Why don't all parts list a brand and model?
Most of our spec is named exactly. The processor, motherboard, case, cooler and power supply are the models listed, every time.
For memory, storage and graphics cards we give a performance and quality guarantee instead of a model name. Supply on these three moves constantly, and pricing with it. Rather than list a part we might not be able to source next week, we commit to the specification: capacity, speed, timings, endurance class. And for graphics cards, we will always give you the chipset (e.g. RTX 5060) and VRAM (e.g. 8GB) that is listed.
We only use parts from established manufacturers. In practice the difference between two well-made components at the same specification is small enough that most people would never notice it.
If you'd like to know exactly what's going into your machine, ask before you order and we'll tell you. If you'd prefer a particular model, we can usually accommodate that, and you'd pay the difference in cost.
👁️ Transparency notes
- Small form factor systems run warmer than towers. On builds like this we typically set the CPU thermal limit to around 80°C in the BIOS. That is deliberate, it protects the machine, and it costs nothing you would notice in a game. It is simply how a 10.4 litre PC is set up properly.
- This is an AM4 build, not AM5. That is what makes the price possible, and it is stated in the platform section above rather than buried. The CPU upgrade path ends with AM4's own top chips rather than continuing into future AMD generations.
- The stock cooler is the weak point, by design. It is adequate and it will not throttle, but it is the loudest part of this machine. We have priced the build around it and made the better cooler an option rather than forcing everyone to buy it.
- Wi-Fi 5, not Wi-Fi 6. Repeated here because it is the sort of specification a buyer checks after ordering rather than before.
- Internals are black. The case is silver aluminium and walnut, but the components inside it are black as standard. There is no glass panel, so this is not visible in normal use. White internals are available via live chat if you would like them.
- Product images are representative photos of a similar spec in the same style. Your PC will look similar but not identical. Our support team can help clarify anything you're unsure of.
- Most parts are named models and will be what is delivered. RAM, SSD and graphics card will instead carry a spec guarantee due to current market conditions making stock very variable. This keeps us agile enough to offer good pricing and honest spec lists. If you want clarity on precise models we will use, drop us a live chat on the day you're ready to purchase and we'll confirm it.
🛠️ Popular upgrade options
- Cooler upgrade to the Thermalright AXP120-X67: choose it from the quick-add upgrades, or speak with us via live chat.
Click or tap for more info
The first upgrade we would recommend on this build, and the one that changes it most. A proper low-profile tower with a 120mm fan in place of AMD's stock cooler. Same temperatures at far lower fan speed, which in a case this small is the whole difference between a PC you are aware of and one you are not. Worth it for anyone putting this machine on a desk.
- GPU upgrade to Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB: choose it from the quick-add upgrades, or speak with us via live chat.
Click or tap for more info
The upgrade we would recommend second. The step up in raw performance is worthwhile, but the 16GB of VRAM is the real point, since that is what keeps a card relevant as textures grow. Worth it if 1440p is where you actually want to end up rather than somewhere you occasionally visit. It is also the largest card we will fit in this case: anything above it needs multiple 8-pin power connectors, which is not something we would ask a 10.4 litre chassis to route.
- Memory upgrade to 32GB: available in the listing options below.
Click or tap for more info
Worth deciding now rather than later. This board has two memory slots and both are occupied, so upgrading afterwards means buying a replacement kit rather than adding to what is there. If you stream, edit, or keep a lot of applications open alongside a game, choose it up front.
- CPU upgrade to Ryzen 7 5700X: choose it from the quick-add upgrades, or speak with us via live chat.
Click or tap for more info
Two more cores and slightly higher clocks. Worth it if you stream, encode video, or run CPU-heavy work alongside gaming. For pure gaming the difference is modest, and we would put the money into the cooler and the graphics card first. If you take this option we would strongly suggest taking the cooler upgrade with it, since the 5700X asks more of it.
- Storage upgrade to 2TB: available in the listing options below.
Click or tap for more info
Worth considering up front on this build specifically. The board has one M.2 slot, so a larger drive now is simpler than adding one later, though the case does take two 2.5 inch SATA SSDs if you would rather expand that way.
- White internal components: available via live chat.
Click or tap for more info
The Terra's silver and walnut exterior suits white internals nicely, though with no glass panel you will only see them when the case is open. Ask us and we will price it up.
